“Cherish therefore the spirit of our people, and keep alive their attention. Do not be too severe upon their errors, but reclaim them by enlightening them. If once they become inattentive to the public affairs, you and I, and Congress, and assemblies, judges and governors shall all become wolves.”
Thomas Jefferson
1787
Our government officials have been granted certain powers and responsibilities by we, the people. However, it would be foolish and dangerous to believe that if left unwatched, those in government would act solely in the best interest of society and within their authorized limits. History and experience have spoken loud and clear: if we the people do not play close attention to the actions and intentions of those in government, power will be abused, rights will be violated, and liberty will be lost.
